If you or someone you know is experiencing Alopecia Areata, you may be wondering, ‘Will I have Hair Loss for life?’ The good news about Alopecia Areata (which may differ from other forms of hair loss), is that the hair follicles remain alive and can grow back at any time.

If you’ve never heard of Alopecia Areata, you may be wondering, what exactly is it? Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune skin disease which causes hair loss. It’s most common form is Alopecia Areata Patchy, which the hair loss is in a specific area, usually round in shape, about the size of a nickel or quarter. But other common forms are Alopecia Totalis, in which the head is completely bald and Alopecia Univerasalis, where the hair is gone from the entire body.

Lately we’re hearing a lot about autoimmune diseases, they are when the body starts to attack itself. When the body feels like there’s a foreign invader, it will do everything to preserve itself, such as when you get a cold, you’re body does everything it can to get you back whole and healthy. But for some reason, the body will sometimes sense that there is an invader, when in fact it’s really your own body. So it starts to attack what it perceives as the invader. In the case of Alopecia Areata, it’s the hair follicles that get attacked.

So what do you do if you start to feel like you’re losing more hair than normal? That’s what we will cover next week..
